Dear Mr. Wilkins:

We had to choose 20 admittees out of 250 applications and I have to tell you
that your application did not survive the preliminary screening intended to
reduce this number to 50.  I do not have your folder and cannot say what was
considered weak by the person who looked at it.  What we consider depends
somewhat on what we get, but unequivocal references from people who know
our standards are most convincing.  Let me advise you however, to apply
to several schools at different levels of selectivity.
